let's get old fashioned

it's Grace Coddington's 70th birthday (or was recently)!
and she's still just as fine. I met her once, at the Prada store during the first Fashion's Night Out. She signed my purse. I swooned.

Rihanna. Yes.

Not gonna lie, I'm marginally obsessed with Rihanna. I love that she rocks red hair, knows how to wear elaborate hats, and stays classy while sporting midriff-baring bandeau dresses and singing a song about bondage. Girl knows how to work it but isn't too self-aware, which is rare in someone of her pop-culture caliber. When rumors began to circulate a few months back that she was to cover American Vogue I was pleasantly surprised, and now that the photos have surfaced I'm downright ecstatic. The cover itself is gorgeous (the flaming locks! the transparent dress!) and the Annie Leibovitz-shot spread does not disappoint. It's typically pretty, as is the Vogue way, but her raw sensual power shines through; I love the lone shot of her wine-colored lipstick snarl. To be honest, she probably would have been a better feature for their Power issue, but Shape works well anyway, especially when she's twisted into a pretzel in a banded Leger suit. Way to go, Vogue, for finally stepping outside your Blake Lively box

also, can the costume designer for this video get some type of award? So many plastic dresses. So many jewels and candies. and the colors! I could go on....

Gaga's leaked Vogue

Lady Gaga's Vogue cover leaked Friday, and sources have confirmed it's authentic. I'm still waiting to see it up close to survey the amount of inevitable airbrushing but there are a few comments at first glance. First, I find it interesting that Vogue feels the need to work in pink into almost every single cover they produce. Her short pink bob is very Lady and I like it a lot, but the complementary pink lettering bothers me. It's just so... well, it's so Vogue. And let's be honest, US Vogue is about the least edgy magazine there is. They could have still kept to their standard but changed the lettering to maybe a deep purple to work off the lipstick, if they still wanted to do matchy-matchy. But that's not to say she's been romanticized here like so many who grace Anna's covers are, especially considering that plum lipstick (love it) and the squared stance. It's pretty, but the combination of the plunging neckline and pink hair are the anchors to Gaga's controversial nature.
I'm also intrigued by the rumor that she's wearing Haider Ackerman. In a very off-hand question, Karl Lagerfeld recently said that should he have to chose a successor today it would likely be Ackermann. I'm wondering if Anna heard this and, if it is Ackermann's dress on Gaga's too-lean frame (airbrushing? Or just another indication that as Gaga's fame rises her body weight drops?), chose accordingly. Or perhaps she just wanted to stray from her usual floaty-frilly dress theme and knew Ackermann would give at least a marginal bit of cred.
